When you think of models, you may conjure up an image of tall, thin people enjoying a glamorous life, having their picture taken and receiving millions of dollars so their face can appear on the cover of a magazine, and this image is not entirely wrong. But for the vast majority of models working in the world today, this is not a realistic portrayal of their lives.
The supermodels whose faces grace the covers of magazines are obviously glamorous and highly talented at what they do, and this is certainly a goal you can aspire to. However, if you are really serious about working as a model, you need to know that there are many more ways of making a living doing this job, even if you never appear on the cover of a popular magazine.
A model is an individual who poses for purposes of art, fashion or advertising. This is different from other types of public performance, such as acting or dancing, but the boundaries between them are often blurred. There are many types of models, including fashion, glamour, fitness, bikini, fine-art and body-part.
Garments and other apparel are worn by models to attract buyers at fashion shows, private showings, and retail establishments. Models are also used for print and television advertisements, on a local, regional and sometimes national basis. They could also pose as the subject of a painting, sculpture or other artistic project.
A modeling career is much like an acting career. Models must go to auditions, which are commonly known as “go-sees” in order to see and be seen by those who have the power to give them jobs.
Models wear clothing and accessories in fashion shows and for various kinds of advertisements in order to capture customers’ interest. Depending on the target customer base, models will wear dresses, suits, underclothing or swimwear. They may also model handbags and shoes, and promote beauty products, such as fragrances and cosmetics.
